Applied Client Network’s 2017 Leadership Academy was informative and engaging. Two days in February were filled with dynamic programming, workshops and networking; and chapter leaders learned how to be more effective, well-rounded individuals to better their local chapters. Connections features two articles that recap this year’s event.

We asked Applied Client Network’s Chair Amber Bosma and CEO Brian Langerman for the scoop on everything that happened at this year’s Leadership Academy.
Among other things, here’s what they had to share:
Q: What sort of activities did you take part in?
Amber Bosma: We had a variety of events for everyone’s learning style: the [Officers Boot Camp] with a wealth of information; a networking event to just learn from each other; [and] information on the way our world is changing and how to adapt to it. A guest speaker, [Claudia St. John, president of Affinity HR Group], opened our eyes to who we are … and how we can adapt our reactions and expectations to other users and their styles, as well as [ways to] use the information, both in our agencies/brokerages and at home.
Q: Why is it a worthwhile experience for chapter leaders?
Amber: The information is incredible, and it all focused on chapter leaders [to help them] in their local setting. Whether it was harvesting ideas as an experienced leader, or being a new leader and just figuring out what forms to fill out or how to receive membership dues.
Brian: [We received] overwhelming positive feedback.

Chapter leaders attended keynote sessions and workshops presented by industry speakers and professionals. After the Officers Boot Camp in the morning, the first afternoon kicked off with Amber Bosma, 2017 Applied Client Network Chair, and Brian Langerman, Applied Client Network CEO, welcomed the full group to start the afternoon.
The first keynote followed: “Working with Style — Behavioral Styles and Why They Matter,” presented by Claudia St. John, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, president of Affinity HR Group, Inc., introduced the DiSC profile tool, a personal assessment tool used for discussion of people’s behavioral differences. Attendees were asked to complete a series of questions that produced a detailed report about their personalities and behaviors, with the ultimate goal of developing as an effective leader. Chapter leaders were categorized as one of four DiSC styles:
- Driver
- Influencer
- Supporter
- Controller
The group explored the findings of their assessments to learn how to personally improve the quality of their work space and environment and adapt their leadership style at the chapter level. The style assessments also helped chapter leaders learn to interpret emotion, body language and spoken language.
